Your Mind Shapes Your Destiny

Manteo Mitchell

“It is the mind that maketh good or ill, that maketh wretch or happy, rich or poor.”–Edmund Spenser

While I was admiring the amazing prowess of the Olympics athletes this summer, I couldn’t help thinking that the physical differences among them were minimal and that, more than anything, the major differentiating factor was in their minds and how they were using them.

While we are not always responsible for the events of our lives, we are responsible for what we think about these events and how we deal with them. An extraordinary example is Manteo Mitchell, the American sprinter who broke his leg during the men’s 4×400 metre semi-final relay race… and kept on running anyway.

It has been said that by controlling our minds, we can shape our destinies. While Mitchell had the physical abilities to become an Olympic champion, in the end, he became one when he continued on racing despite the searing pain of his broken leg. His heroic achievement earned Team USA a spot in the finals, which lead to a silver medal on the podium. It also earned Mitchell a symbolic Olympic award for courage on the field of play.

How did he do it? While his courage and determination pushed him the rest of the way around the track after he felt his leg break, Mitchell credits his accomplishment to something more than sheer drive.

“Faith, focus, finish. Faith, focus, finish. That’s the only thing I could say to myself,” he said.

Our minds define our destinies. If we want more rewarding lives, we have to pay close attention to the way we think in every aspect of life and learn to overcome the mental blocks which keep us from success. Be mindful of what you think and always be aware that the way you perceive the world will create your reality.

Ultimately, with faith in yourself and focus on what you want to achieve, you will have a chance to cross the finish line and earn a place on the podium.
