November 2005: Your mind defines your life

To find help with achieving their goals people have always sought collaborative assistance from guides, mentors, teachers and today, coaches.

For many years coaching was mainly associated with competitive sport. As the profile of top athletes grew larger, they began to look for any edge they could get to stay at the top of their game and would seek out the best coaches to help ensure their success. “Just as great athletes make huge gains with the help of their coaches, people at all levels of organizations are seeing phenomenal results through support from business coaches” says Ken Blanchard, author of the One Minute Manager.

When business coaching began about twenty years ago, it was used by only a handful of people, particularly senior executives who were seeking coaches to help them advance personally and professionally. As business became increasingly competitive, the role of business coaches increased tremendously.

Now news of the effectiveness of coaching has spread, and coaching has reached every level of the corporate world. Today the benefits of coaching are enjoyed by hundreds of thousands of people who are now better able to maximize their potential, productivity and achieve greater success.

You may now be asking yourself the question: What can coaching do for me? How can coaching help me or my staff to achieve our agreed goals and objectives?

Organizations spend a great deal of capital to develop and train their workforce and their leaders. But unlike many training and development processes, coaching has the advantage of continuous customization to ensure that participants reach targeted, tangible goals under the rigorous guidance of their coach.

In December, Dr. Marilyn Atkinson, one of the world’s leading coaches and mentor-coaches, will be in Prague to present a workshop entitled The Art and Science of Coaching (TASC).

Although the name of the workshop doesn’t reflect my own view on the nature of coaching, it is an Accredited Coach Training Program (ICF-ACTP) approved by the International Coach Federation.

Timing: December 11 to December 14
Language: English
Location: To be announced later

Upon completion of the workshop, participants will receive a certificate from Erickson College, Canada.

Communication Tip of the Month: Your mind defines your life.

It is the mind that maketh good or ill, that maketh wretch or happy, rich or poor. – Edmund Spenser.

It has been said that we can control our destiny by controlling ourselves. We are each responsible for our lives and, more importantly, for the thoughts that shape them. To enjoy a more rewarding life, we must be ready to change the way we think.

The human mind is like a computer with an unlimited store of memory. As such, it allows us to keep past experiences for the future, as life is a constant learning process. That way, we learn from both our failures and our successes. Having achieved a negative result, we can reflect on those things that may have gone wrong and avoid similar mistakes in the future.

How Can You Achieve More in Life?

Learn from your experiences, both positive and negative. Every situation presents you with an opportunity to learn, so long as you make the effort to look at it with an open and receptive mind.

Take ownership of your mistakes. Every action is your responsibility. Avoiding responsibility for your actions will create more pain and discomfort, as unresolved issues have a tendency to come back to haunt you.

Never make the same mistake twice. Repeat the same actions and you can expect the same results.

Never be afraid to transform something negative into something positive. With practice, anyone can find a silver lining in the darkest cloud and turn a mistake into an opportunity to learn. In the face of adversity, carefully take note those things you can control and take action to change what you can.

Don’t beat yourself up. There are plenty of people who will do it for you. It’s all right to be your own worst critic, but never undermine yourself. Nor should you let the criticism or scrutiny of others have too much influence your life and your actions.

Your mind is what you make it. So think positively and always be aware that you create the world as you see it.

Yours truly,
Karin
